The following human rights problems were reported:

* excessively long court proceedings
* violence against women
* child abuse
* trafficking in persons
* child labor

There were approximately 80 newspapers, of which 8 had national readership; the Prime Minister Berlusconi's family controlled 2 of them.

Critics charged that Prime Minister Berlusconi directly or indirectly controlled six of the country's seven national broadcast channels. Although Prime Minister Berlusconi through his Finivest company sold 17 percent of his shares during the year, he continued to hold a major interest in Mediaset, which owned three channels, and the state-owned network RAI controlled the other three.
