Bernabe Fernandez put up Chilam Balam as a 9b+ in 2003 which created a lot of controversy. Alex Huber questioned the 9b+ here on 8a and so did we did we as Bernabe did not show any willingness to follow up or say who belayed him. For this Alex and 8a were criticized. Later Adam Ondra did it rather quickly and said it was a "low end 9b". (c) © François "Ponpon" Poncet
Seb Bouin just did the third ascent and Pierre Delas at Kairnasked him about the grade? (The whole interview will be followed up).
- It is clear that 9b+ was a mega joke! I do not think it's a proper 9b. For Adam Ondra it is a low end 9b. For Dani Andrada who tried it with me it is 9a+. Edu Marin says 9a+/9b. After reflection I suggest 9a+/9b. I think there are 9b's that are much harder...
From the 8a perspective, this just proves that the media in some way should be involved in the grading in order to present as correct news as possible. It is a saying that only the guys who have done the route should be allowed to comment on the grade. Clearly, in this case, it was good that Alex Huber took a stand and I also think it is great that Andrada and Marin gave their opinion.
e aggiungerei
lo so,
